AGMI: Return your old traffic signs!

AGMI: Return your old traffic signs!

The second edition of the National Traffic Sign Return Day contributes to a circular and sustainable public space.

Tegelen, October 2025 – On Wednesday, 5 November, AGMI Traffic & Lighting will once again host the National Traffic Sign Return Day. With this annual initiative, the company draws attention to the reuse of traffic and wayfinding signs, as part of its mission to make the sector fully circular.

In the Netherlands, it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of surplus traffic signs are in circulation. Many of these end up in storage or are destroyed, even though they are perfectly suitable for reuse. AGMI aims to change this with its Re-Sign production process, where old traffic signs are stripped of their film. This is done without chemicals, using only high-pressure cleaning with rainwater, after which the signs are refitted with new film.

“With the National Traffic Sign Return Day, we want to make the reuse of traffic signs visible, simple, and appealing,” says Franka van de Gevel, Operational Director at AGMI Traffic & Lighting. “We’ve already come a long way: a large portion of the signs we supply now consists of reused examples. But to become fully circular, we need the support of municipalities, contractors, and managers.”

Towards 100% Reuse

Between the last edition and the upcoming one, 7,300 traffic signs were collected, resulting in a CO2 saving of 104,974 kg and a cost reduction of €42,662 for participating parties, thanks to AGMI’s deposit system.

Municipalities, provinces, contractors, and other road authorities can easily register via the website or at info@agmi.nl. They will then receive all the necessary information and resources to collect and deliver old traffic signs.

Sustainability in Practice

The National Traffic Sign Return Day is part of AGMI’s broader sustainability mission: minimizing raw material use and extending the lifespan of existing materials. With its circular Re-Sign concept, AGMI sets the standard for sustainable wayfinding and signage in the Netherlands.

“Every manager who participates contributes directly to less waste, lower CO2 emissions, and a more efficient use of resources,” says Franka van de Gevel. “Together, we can make the Dutch public space a showcase of circular innovation.”
