Waterschap Hollandse Delta had a clear objective: to improve safety at wastewater treatment plants, sewage pumping stations, shipyards and surface water pumping stations through the use of clear, unambiguous signage. Staff and visitors need to be able to see at a glance where they are, what rules, prohibitions and hazards apply, and how they can act quickly and safely in the event of an emergency. Visual clarity and reliability were key priorities in this regard.

Safety explained through pictograms
The client was looking for a solution to communicate safety in a clear and consistent manner within wastewater treatment plants, sewage pumping stations, construction sites and surface water pumping stations, construction sites and surface water pumping stations. By using clear pictograms and highly visible signage, the aim was to ensure that the rules and how to act in an emergency were immidiately apparent at glance.

From initial assessment to handover: our approach
To maintain a clear overview and control, the work has been divided into sub-projects. This has enabled us to proceed with care for each location and type of signage.
Inventory and Coordination
Using reports, all existing signs on site were inventoried and categorised by type and quantity. This provided a clear overview of the current situation and the necessary improvements
Design and Coordination
Drawings were prepared for each location based on the inventory. These were submitted to the clients approval. Once approved, the designs were finalised and prepared for production.
Production and installation
Following approval, the signs and stickers were produced, printed and fitted with the appropiate films. They were then professionally installed on site, and the project was handed over along with comprehensive dossier.
Signage used
Various types of signage have been installed to ensure optimum safety:
- Zone signage: Indicates zones and associated rules using clear pictograms. These signs are printed on Class 3 firm for optimum visibility and reflectivity.
- Escape route markings: Immediately indicate the quickest route to safety in the event of emergency. The markings are printed on photoluminescent film, which remains visible in the dark for several hours.
- Safety signage: Provides assistance in the event of an emergency by indicating the location of fire extinguishers, emergency telephones and other essential equipment. Like escape route signage, these signs are printed on photoluminescent film for the same reason
