Re-Sign® gives aluminium slats a second life, without using new materials or a melting process. For a roadside sign installation commissioned by Heijmans, AGMI supplied an ALISA system with a unique background. The slats used in the installation are not new. They come form a directional sign that had previously been installed outdoors.

Background
Traffic signs and directional signage eventually reach the end of their functional lifespan: the reflective sheeting has aged, the lettering is no longer up to date, or the sign no longer meetsthe apllicable guidelines . In practice, this often means that the sign is discarded and replaced with new material. With Re-Sign®, AGMI deliberately takes a different approach.
The approach: Re-Sign®
Through the Re-Sign® process, the returned sign was dismantled into induvidual aluminium slats. The slats were then stripped of their old retroreflective sheeting and fitted with new sheeting tailored to the new application.
The process requires no new aluminium and no melting process. The aluminium from the original sign is retained in its existing form and directly reused. This not only saves raw materials, but also the energy normally required for a melting process.
The result
The Re-Signed slats have been incorporated into a newALISA system for a roadside sign installation for Heijmans. Visually, the result is indistinguishable from a sign made with new aluminium: the same quality, the same retroreflectivity values and the same expected lifespan. Before long, the sign will be back alongside the road, this time with a second life.
Why this is relevant for road authorities
Re-Sign® demonstrates that component-level reuse is possible without compromising safety or quality. For municipalities and contractors that take circularity into account in tenders, this offers a concrete alternative to the standard practice of replacing directinal signage with new material.
